The 40th Annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event has completed its round of ‘Day Ones’ with some prominent players being eliminated, with a very memorable entrance and a rather large disagreement. Among the earlier Main Event champions this year and the ones who will not be repeating their previously great performances are: Huck S (1996 champ), Jerry Y (2007 champ), Tom M (1983 champ) and Jamie G (2006 champ) and with the other notable poker players who will not see ‘Day Two’ include Jeff M, Allen C (2005 champ) and Daniel N (2004 champ).
Also celebrities like the actor Gabe Kaplan and Orel Hershiser the former baseball pitcher, will also not be participating in day two, as their dreams of winning WSOP gold had come to an end on Day One itself.
Phil Hellmuth, one of the ex-World Champions who was the 1989 Main Event Winner, always makes a big entrance. The previous year he made an entrance to the tournament dressed as General George S. Patton and the year prior to that, he was dressed as a formula 1 driver. This year, he has definitely outdone himself… he dressed up as Caesar. There’s a new king in town.
Some poker players decided to wait until ‘Day 1’ to register for the Main Event and with the Main Event day selling well over 2,000 seats. Many players who tried to sign up also criticized the ‘special treatment’ given to big name professionals over online qualifiers or amateurs who tried to enter late. World Series Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack is apparently working out a way of bring these other players who were left out unable to buy a ticket, into the gaming field.
Currently, the field holds a little less than 6,500 players giving out a total prize pool of more than US$61 million and the first prize winner is scheduled to receive more than US$8.5 million. Wow, that’s a lot of bucks for knowing your kings, queens and aces.
