Will Obama Legalize Gambling?

The point of disagreement between the US and the European Union is the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA). The Act was initially created to stop any US financial organization from transferring funds to US online casinos excluding horse racing and lotteries. So what if anything has changed since 2006? Will Obama legalize gambling?

At the moment, the European Commission debates that the United States’ UIGEA breaks the EU regulations in trade deals. While the Bush administration conveniently ignored the work along with international organizations, Obama’s views on this issue are to be quite different from his predecessor’s. As a matter of fact, Obama is currently working to settle the issue with the European Commission. A resolution for this problem should come before the “grace period” otherwise the crisis will be handed over to the World Trade Organization for further inquiry.

The President has not stated his stand on gambling on the internet, his interest to work with the European Commission and UN conflict resolution looks like a ray of hope for legalized online gambling in the US.

Legalized Online Gambling – the road ahead

What does the future have in store for legalized online gambling? Last year, Congressman Barney Frank put forward a bill that would overturn UIGEA but the vote received by the bill was 32-32 which is a no result condition. In order to pass the committee floors this bill needs just one more vote.

However Frank has not admitted defeat and is doing all he can to knock over the UIGEA. In fact, Frank is very confident that his bill will be approved early next year with the Democratic president’s assistance and a greater part of Democrats in Congress. With 48 cosponsors to support his bill to revoke UIGEA it can be hoped that if the bill is approved online gambling will be regulated much more effectively than ever before. The U.S. government will gain a significant amount in tax returns which may effectively help to enhance the economy.
