The discussions surrounding Representative Barney Frank’s online gambling legislation proposal are on the verge of growing to heated debate in the coming months. Frank roped in another supporter on Monday and Weiner, who represents New York’s 9th District, has become the 63rd and last co-sponsor for Frank’s Bill.
With legislators paying most of their attention to the economic conditions, the problem regarding US online casinos gambling legalization and regulation has been put in the back seat for almost a year of President Obama’s term.
The strong Republican Congress had forced in the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006 making it illegal for financial institutions to furnish any kind of transactions with online gambling sites. Ever since this law was enforced there has been huge protest not only from gambling enthusiasts of the US but from several countries across the globe. In further developments, the European Commission, which governs the activities of the European Union, raised a petition against the US for being in violation of the trade agreements with the UIGEA. The Commission granted time to the US to rectify their imperfect law, but the Obama administration is yet to respond to this petition.
If the US does not meet the terms in the awarded grace period, the Commission will be forced to file a case against the US to the World Trade Organization. If the US is found to be in violation of the trade agreements, the country could face sanctions from the WTO.
Barney Frank is trying to avoid such a situation with his new proposal. If the legislation is passed it will bring about the regulation of internet gambling in the US. Frank strongly believes and advocates that the people of the US should be allowed the freedom for participate on online gambling activities if they choose to do so.
Frank is trying to be a supporter of every American’s rights to participate in gambling on a regulated basis. It’s perfectly fair to be allowed to enjoy this entertaining and lucrative activity. If the administration would sit up and take notice of this, it would be a great relief to all of us gambling lovers. Don’t you think so?
