A4 = TRANSVESTITE

In Holdem, players typically peek at their hole cards by lifting just the corners and squeezing the back card forward just enough to identify it. When a player sees the Ace and slides the Four up ever so slightly, the first impression upon seeing the top of the “4” is often that it’s a second Ace. Hole cards of an Ace with a Six can be called the “Mile High Club”. The Ace suggests “airplane” both because of its shape and the common beginning letter, and the Six is sometimes referred to in slang as “Sex”. Put the two together and you have Mile High Club, a phrase used to describe having had sex in an airplane, at least a mile above the earth.

A8 = DEAD MAN’S HAND

The card combination of an Ace with an Eight (A-8) has perhaps the most well-known nickname in poker: Dead Man’s Hand. This is, of course, a reference to the legend of Wild Bill Hickok’s final poker hand, although his cards were actually a pair of Aces and a pair of Eights.

AJ = JACKASS

The starting combination of an Ace with a Jack is sometimes referred to as “Jackass” – with “jack” being self-explanatory and “ass” alluding to the Ace. Similarly, the Ace-Jack hole cards have been called “Apple Jacks” and “Ajax”.

AK = ANNA KOURNIKOVA

In reference to the letters representing the Ace (A) and King (K), this Texas Hold’em starting hand is sometimes called an “Anna Kournikova” after the hot-bodied tennis player whose name bears the same initials.
