Californian online poker players are keeping their fingers crossed hoping that online poker will be soon legalized in the States again. The California Online Poker Law Enforcement Compliance and Consumer Protection Act is a bill that will soon be evaluated by the State legislature. Its aim is to legalize and regulate internet poker within Californian borders.

The bill is drawing a clear distinction between gaming within the State borders and the UIGEA, underlining that intrastate gambling is not “illegal” under the UIGEA. To explain the question in other words, if the bill is passed, online gambling will be considered legal in California again.

The first part of the bill takes into consideration the current online gambling situation stressing the fact that US residents are spending billions of dollars in gambling and that all the money is going offshore to foreign companies. California State has already legalized and regulated live poker games but is not yet protecting all the californians that choose to play online.

The draft of the bill carrys on saying that it is in the interest of the State and its residents to design a regulatory system to allow, license and control the online poker operations. The basic idea is for California to provide a safe and regulated online environment where a player can access a licensed poker website, in a similar way as it’s working for live card rooms. The licenses for internet poker operations will be granted to Californian tribes and gaming companies that currently have a valid gaming license.

Supporting the approval of the bill there are the budget problems of the State, which is trying to find new sources of revenues. US online casinos will definitely provide a good source of help with the taxes. Considering that California has already authorized, regulated and taxed other gambling activities, adding online poker is just the next logical step in the process.
