A $1 billion gambling resort opposite Gillette Stadium could incorporate a lavish inn, retail outlets, gambling hall, restaurants, and convention space that its visionaries claim could still feel as though it “fits in the woods” of Foxborough. That was the pitch from New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and club investor Steve Wynn. The two made a joint presence in Foxborough yesterday to contend that this proposed casino could be a wonderful investment for the town and district.
Unlike his Las Vegas based towering casinos this resort is currently designed to be no taller than the Gillette Stadium it stands opposite. “For Vegas, yes I could understand a huge building. But for Massachusetts something like that would be completely out of scale, and quite frankly inappropriate.” My Wynn declared when questioned about the size.
There are currently no buildings this tall in the area, and a 200ft Casino would still likely severely overshadow the mostly 1-2 story buildings, many of which are small retail outlets. Robert Kraft had originally wanted to build an office development aimed at technology companies, but quickly abandoned the plan after it proved too costly an investment. The casino partnership seemed to offer a much better “opportunity to create jobs” for those who don’t know how to get started in the area. Kraft emphasized the fact that he is not building a casino to to benefit his personal wealth, but rather as an opportunity to leave behind a wonderful legacy that will greatly benefit the overall community.
“I’m not driven by making money, because basically whatever money I make from here on in is going to charity or the US government is going to take it. What I would like to see is this town win in every way, not just Super Bowl championships.” Adding that he wanted it to have the “best school system” and that “You can’t do that if you don’t have economic vitality.”
